NJF seminar 424 Mapping and Monitoring
of Nordic Vegetation and Landscapes 16-18 September 2009 Iceland |
 |
 |
 |
The Nordic countries face numerous common challenges regarding the development of their landscapes. Their northern position, similar nature and similar cultural values suggest a number of possible benefits from an increased Nordic cooperation. Moreover, most of the Nordic countries have signed the European landscape convention and thereby committed themselves to managing their landscapes in a way that maintains viable populations of plants and animals and that safeguards diversity of habitat types and landscapes.
These issues call for increased information exchange between the Nordic countries regarding the mapping and monitoring of vegetation and landscapes. The scientific milieus and practitioners working with these themes deal with questions on the interface between research, private sector development and management of nature and cultural landscapes. However, contact and cooperation amongst these milieus needs to be strengthened. We are therefore arranging a Nordic conference in Iceland in September 2009 with the following aims:
• Share experience and knowledge about up-to-date Nordic vegetation and landscape mapping and monitoring: methods, study design, content, implementation, analysis and most recent tools for processing map data.
• Present scientific findings relevant for the private and public sector, the agricultural sector and nature management.
• Develop networks between different countries’ scientific mapping communities.

 |
• Mapping of vegetation and landscapes
• Monitoring of vegetation and landscapes
• Cultural landscapes and management
• Landscape structure, processes and change

| We seek to engage two broad scientific and practicing milieus; vegetation and landscape mapping and monitoring that produce multi-use data. Both scientists and practitioners working on these topics build much of their mapping and monitoring on the use of aerial photo interpretation combined with different degrees of fieldwork, and thereby share important methodological approaches as well as numerous challenges. |
