NJF seminar 432
The potential of forage legumes to sustain a high agricultural productivity – A Nordic perspective
20-22 June 2010 Iceland
Background
Historically legumes have been the key to agricultural development. Even today with high inputs of mineral fertilizers, a rough estimate shows that about a quarter of the nitrogen in our agricultural systems originates from the N2-fixation of legumes. Future agricultural scenarios are affected by increasing energy prices, increasing human population and increasing consumer wealth, resulting in higher protein intake through meat. It can therefore be expected that prices of e.g. mineral fertilizers and soybean concentrate will increase, making locally grown fodder more competitive than is currently the case.

The sustainability of legume based agricultural systems will be the topic of the NJF seminar. Forage legumes not only supply high quality fodder, but they also increase soil fertility via high N residuals left in the soil.
