NJF seminar 439
Dairy production in modern loose housing cowsheds - practical implications and future challenges
4-6 May 2011 Estonia

Background
Interest in cold naturally ventilated dairy buildings has increased recently because of their lower investment, construction and maintenance costs. In Estonia there are over 100 large-scale uninsulated modern loose housing cowsheds with a range of 300 to 2000 lactating cows. The number of dairy cows in Estonia has decreased by almost 60% from the beginning of 1990 to 2011, but the average milk yield per cow has risen by over 50%, due to the adaptation of more efficient feeding, breeding and production techniques. The Baltic and Nordic countries share many similarities regarding, for example, climate conditions but there are large differences in dairy production. Estonia has considerably more large-scale dairy farms than other neighbouring countries. The aim of the conference is to share the Estonian and Nordic experiences of dairy cattle keeping and management in cold loose housing farms.
Topics
The scientific programme of the conference is open to all areas of expertise connected with dairy production in modern (cold) loose housing cowsheds. The main topics are:
- Engineering and building
- Breeding
- Feeding and feeding technology
- Husbandry and management
- Precision farming
- Animal welfare

Call for papers and posters
Abstracts of Oral and poster presentations.
Submission of abstracts with a maximum length of one page is requested for both oral and poster presentations.
The official language of the conference is English. All abstracts and presentations shall be prepared and presented in English.
The authors are responsible for the scientific content and language quality of the abstracts. The Organizing Committee reserves the right to select among the submitted titles for oral or poster presentations, if necessary.
Accepted abstracts will be published in conference proceedings in the NJF Report series. Poster presentations will also be included in the proceedings. Deadline for abstracts is 31st January 2011. Notification of acceptance for oral or poster presentations will be receipt of 10th February 2011.
Please use the following abstract template:
Title of presentation (Verdana, 12 pt)
Name(s) of author(s)
Address and affiliation of authors
Telephone, fax and e-mail address of the first author. If there is more than one address for the authors, use sub-scripts to indicate who is from which institute (Verdana shrift, 10 pt, Italic). Abstract body text (Verdana, 10 pt)

Abstracts for oral and poster presentations are to be submitted to Allan Kaasik: allan.kaasik@emu.ee

Preparation of posters.
Each poster presentation will be allocated on one display board. The dimensions of the poster must be 1.2 m x 0.85 m in portrait layout. The title of the poster and details of the author(s) must be included as part of the poster. It is recommended that details of author affiliations are kept to a minimum as affiliation and contact details will be shown in the proceedings. Posters should be clear, simple and self-explanatory. Sub-headings (usually Objectives, Methods, Results, and Conclusions) will be appropriate. Text, including axis labels and legends on tables and figures, should be no smaller than 36 point (capitals = 9 mm high; lower case = 6 mm high).
