NJF seminar 456 Local Food - a step towards better and more environmentally friendly products Local food 18-19 September 2012 Denmark |
 |
 |
 |
Interest in locally produced food has increased in recent years. Local foods are in demand for various reasons: concern for the environment and sustainability, to satisfy the demand for product quality, to support local farmers and the local economy, or to express a preference for a certain agricultural production and distribution practice. Some claims made for local food have been ”proved” by research, while other claims, mainly on environmental issues, are debated. One aim of this seminar is to shed light on these issues.
Contemporary consumer campaigns aim at promoting re-localisation of food production by directing the consumers toward more local food purchasing as part of sustainable eating habits. Local food supply chains focus on a re-integration of consumption and production and rely on a higher acceptance by the consumers of seasonal variation. The aim for this re-integration has resulted in food cultural movements like the ‘ New Nordic Food’, ‘matlandet Sverige’, ‘programmet för främjande av finländsk matkultur’ and the ‘slow food movement’ and other alternative food networks in general in opposition to conventional, long food chains. Such initiatives in various ways advocate the importance of linking territory, culture and food and at the same time promote sustainable consumption. In order to explore the aspects of local food relevant to the NJF network as well as to collect knowledge on local food in the Nordic and Baltic countries, we invite papers and posters on the following topics (case studies, research in progress, reviews).

A preliminary list of presentations is available under "Download".
The programme of the seminar will start at 10:00 on 18 September and end at approx. 16:30 on 19 September 2012. An excursion will be arranged on 20 September 2012, please see separate programme.
1. Production of local food/what is local food?
This topic focuses on how local food can be defined and characterized. It also deals with quality and health aspects of local foods as well as the specific genetic resources such as land, race, breeds and native crops (terroir) that are often associated with local foods. Papers focusing on production systems on a regional scale are also included here.
2. Local supply/value chains
This topic invites papers dealing with the value chain perspective, including all actors in the local supply chain – farmers, transporters, processors, retailers, markets, and consumers. We are especially interested in case studies on logistical solutions in local food systems, but all papers on economic and social advantages and drawbacks of local supply chains are highly relevant. This also includes initiatives to label local foods and public procurement of local foods.
3. Environmental aspects of local food systems
Under this heading, research that assesses the environmental impacts of local food production and consumption is invited. How does local food perform in relation to regional, national and global food systems? What are the environmental impacts from local transports?
4. Local food movements
This topic deals with the emerging food activist movements and the attention to local foods in the food culture. There are a number of government initiatives in the Nordic countries that try to boost regional and local foods. We invite scholarly analysis of these initiatives as well as of bottom-up initiatives such as the Slow Food movement, New Nordic Food, and alternative food system initiatives in general. Who can afford local foods, what are the social justice implications of a new food culture and local food market venues? Can local foods become food for the many?
